APRIL 8, 2006: Iolani’s Kela Marciel wins in first varsity start

Kela Marciel could do it all when he was at Iolani, and proved it on this date in 2006.

The freshman got a lot of help from his teammates and needed it to come out with a win over dangerous Saint Louis. His teammates gifted him with 18 runs, 11 of them in the second inning after Marciel allowed one in his two trips to the mound. Case Miyahira and Chris Johnson both hit home runs to build a lead that should have been good enough for anyone.

Marciel ran into trouble and got chased in the fifth inning, but the experience was invaluable.

Iolani was No. 1 when Marciel made his debut, but didn’t pitch in the state tournament at any time in his career, but played second base on 2009’s ILH championship team. He also served as point guard and quarterback for the school.

Wasn’t Iolani the #1 seed in the 2009 State tournament losing to Moanalua in the Quarterfinals? Marciel was a senior that year along with Almadova and Nagamine.

Ah, thanks. I meant to write he didn’t pitch in the state tournament. Thanks.
