Kahuku junior pitcher David Barney was off his game a little bit on this date in 1966, but he didn’t mind a bit.
Barney, the team’s ace who threw the school’s first no-hitter the year before, allowed six runs and eight hits but beat Waianae 11-6 when his mates put up 11 hits on three Seariders pitchers.
Barney stood just 5-foot-4 and teamed with 5-5 junior Fui Alo for the smallest pitching staff in the league. Despite Barney’s size, he was also a basketball standout and made the all-tournament team for the Punahou Invitational as a senior.
“He doesn’t throw hard, but he throws strikes,” Kahuku coach Dave Naud said. “All he has is a dirty hand and a prayer.”
Kahuku failed to make the OIA playoffs in 1966, the Red Raiders would have to wait until 2008 to taste the state tournament.
I love the sports flashbacks! Never saw those pictures cause I attended a rival school on the other side of the island. Really buoyed reading the names of teammates that I knew as well!
