Having one Hawaii player on a men’s college basketball team is rare enough — Whitworth (Wash.) might soon have two.
Damien star Jake Holtz tweeted on Monday that he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Pirates, joining Leilehua product Liam Fitzgerald.
Holtz is the only two-time All-State basketball player for Damien, as well as being one of the ILH’s elite quarterbacks. He explored the possibility of playing both sports at the next level, but has probably thrown his last pass and will concentrate on basketball at his new school.
Holtz will see plenty of familiar faces on campus, as the football team is a staple in the Star-Advertiser’s Hawaii Grown Report and boasts of 18 players from the islands including former Damien teammate and current freshman defensive back Lindon Sevilleja.
Holtz, a 6-foot-5 senior, led the Monarchs to their first victory in a top-tier state-tournament game this year, beating Lahainaluna and Moanalua before falling to eventual champion Maryknoll in the semifinals. Damien had not been in the top-tier state tournament since 1974.
Holtz’s 63 points in the state tournament is the most in the big dance in school history, beating Pat McGinn‘s 54 in three games in 1974. Holtz averaged 15.7 in his four games, McGinn averaged 18.0.
Congrats to Sid the Sloth what a great kid and phenomenal basketball player.
Isn’t Whitworth a NCAA D3 University? If so, D3 schools do not offer athletic scholarships. So are you saying he has an academic scholarship?
Yup, D3 no athletic scholarships, maybe academic if anything.
@really if you didnt know by now Jake is an honor student with a high GPA. He is not only an athlete he does well in school. A true student athlete.
Viriliter Age, Jake!
D3 don’t give schollies tho….
Many D3 schools offer academic scholarships to student athletes. This is how they are able to recruit. So yes he most likely received a scholarship for academics.
