On this date in 1992, Tyra Padello scored six of her 13 points in the third quarter to erase a halftime deficit and Kaimuki beat Farrington 48-40 to clinch the OIA East title with an 8-1 record.
Farrington fought back to trail 42-40 with 50 seconds left on a field goal by Christina Afe but got no closer. Afe finished with 14 points and Babe Williams added 10 but repeated turnovers killed the Governors along with the 10 more personal fouls committed compared to the Bulldogs.
Leslie Niumata added 10 points for the Bulldogs, who held Farrington ace Jodi Pila scoreless.
Moanalua had previously won the West with a perfect 10-0 record. Na Menehune went on to win the OIA and finish second in states to juggernaut Kamehameha. Kaimuki lost to University in the first round of the state tournament but fought back to beat St. Anthony and Mililani to earn the school’s first consolation crown.
Kaimuki fell to Radford 49-31 in the OIA semifinals, the third time they lost to the Rams during the season, and fell to ILH runner up University 45-43 on a short jumper by Erika Enomoto with five seconds left in overtime. Padello led Kaimuki with 14 points. Padello went on to earn OIA East first-team honors. A standout in softball as well, Padello was also named her school’s female athlete of the year.

>> Julie Nahoi and Tanya Chapman scored 11 points each and Roosevelt beat Kalaheo 49-23 as the Rough Riders outscored the Mustangs in every quarter and made more free throws (10) than Kalaheo attempted (2).
>> Jill Teruya and Shelly Tilton combined to outscore McKinley by themselves as Castle beat the Tigers 34-24.The win helped the Knights tie McKinley and Farrington for fourth place in the OIA East. McKinley’s top player, Pele Baker, missed the contest to play in the Haili volleyball tournament in Hilo.
>> Carrie Leong and Heather Galase combined for 29 of Kalani’s 39 points and the Falcons beat Kaiser 39-35. The Cougars were limited to just four players for the final 3 1/2 minutes, but Carla Rezentes still managed to lead all scorers with 20 points.
