On this date in 1986, Radford’s Reed Anderson did his best to ensure a newspaper would never spell his name wrong again.
Anderson climbed the mound at Aloha Stadium and shut out Mililani over nine innings, only to wake up to find his first name misspelled in the Honolulu Advertiser’s account of the game.
Anderson and batterymate Raul Benitez limited Mililani to two hits and two walks, striking out seven. The only times the Trojans cracked him were a first-inning single by Ricky Tahara and a double in the sixth by Tracy Cordero. Radford’s defense committed three errors, but Anderson never let them hurt him.
Mililani’s Brian Nuha also went the full nine innings, giving up seven hits but walking six.
The Rams didn’t give Anderson the lead until the fifth inning when Keith Smith tripled and scored on a single by Mike Leonard. Gaynor Sodetani went 2-for-2 with a solo home run to further back Anderson.
Anderson finished his senior season with an OIA West All-Star selection for both newspapers after fashioning an ERA of 1.90. Radford missed out on the state tournament in Anderson’s senior year, but he was judged the school’s top scholar athlete and earned honorable mention on the Star-Bulletin’s all-state team.
