It’s been quite a wrestling journey this year for Shannlynne Mahoe of Nanakuli.
In the past, she was a steady performer at 225 pounds, even though she was pretty much about 193 on the scale.
It’s a different story this year. Mahoe dropped weight and is about 159 now, wrestling in the 168-pound class.
After winning the OIA title, Mahoe is out to get the next step — a gold medal in the Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships at Blaisdell Arena. She’s through to this afternoon’s quarterfinals after a victory earlier in the day over Hulita Ahonima of Leilehua.
“I feel like I have a good chance (at states),” Mahoe said. “I put in a lot of work, and hard work pays off. I’m going to do what I can, do what I practice for.”
Dropping the weight was a “little hard,” according to Mahoe.
“A lot of days out of the summer, just working out,” she said. “It took a lot of time away from my family to get where I wanted to be.”
About getting the OIA title, she added, “A lot of hard work, a lot of time after practices. Coming in early to practices with my partner.”
Next up in the quarters for Mahoe is Jaye Kaiwi-Lee of Keaau.
