LIVE BLOG: Day 1 of the 2020 Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships

The two-day 2020 Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships begins today at Blaisdell Arena as we get back to the traditional Friday-Saturday format.

Hawaii Prep World will provide up-to-the-minute coverage throughout the entire two days beginning with the first preliminary matches that start at 10 a.m.

Each weight class will have its own page where you can follow along with all of the results as they happen.

BREAKING

A high school athlete was arrested after allegedly threatening a referee and grabbing his shirt and then pushing down a security guard at the Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships at Blaisdell Area on Friday.

According to witnesses, a wrestler was upset about losing a match due to penalties assessed by officials, and while other matches were going on, he approached the referee, grabbing his shirt and threatening him. The incident caused a commotion in the arena and temporarily stopped all matches going on the six mats.

A security guard tried to break up the mini mob scene and after a group of his agitated friends and family moved from one mat to another, the security guard was thrown down by the wrestler. He and his friends and family, who were loudly yelling words of support for the wrestler, were escorted out of the arena by HHSAA officials, but that process took about five minutes.

During the disturbance, another man, using a cane, was heard saying, “I’ll put you down with one leg.” It wasn’t clear who he was speaking to.

We have had to temporarily halt action as an incident broke out on the center mat. Multiple adults came storming in from the crowd and a wrestler came out and shoved an official to the mat. Ugly incident.

Kamehameha’s Kysen Terukina takes time between matches to talk college possibilities.

OIA champion Max Higa of Roosevelt is knocked off by McKinley’s Michael Stovall in the preliminary round. Higa pinned Stovall in the OIA quarters in 1:28.

We have our first big upset of the day as Moanalua’s Keane Escaba knocks off No. 2 seed Kaistin Vasquez in the preliminary round at 113 pounds. That’s two wins already today for Escaba, who gets KS-Hawaii’s Raizen Aina later on for a shot in the semifinals.

12:35 p.m. Qualifying round has just concluded. Here we go with the preliminaries beginning with the girls.

11 p.m.: And we are underway. One of our five matches to watch is off as Pac-Five’s Scott Fujishima is no longer listed in the boys’ 113 bracket. ‘Iolani’s Robert Frias will face Kalani’s Jayce Kamimura.

10:30 p.m.: Still waiting to begin. There will be some changes in the brackets.
