FINAL RANKINGS: Kamehameha ends season back on top

For a team that has won 22 state championships overall and 10 out of the last 17, Kamehameha was in an unfamiliar position this season.

The Warriors began the season ranked No. 2 in the state and were dropped to third for four different weeks. It wasn’t until two weeks ago, after winning four matches in five days to secure the ILH championship, that Kamehameha finally reached the top spot.

That’s where they stay to close out the 2019 season after beating Punahou in four sets on Saturday night in the Division I final of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships. Kamehameha is the unanimous No. 1 in the final Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 of the season.

Kamehameha finishes ahead of No. 2 Punahou, the ILH regular-season champion, who move back up to No. 2 trading spots with ‘Iolani.

The Buffanblu won in four against Kahuku and Kamehameha-Hawaii before sweeping OIA champion Mililani to get to Saturday’s final.

The Raiders, who lost to the Warriors in a five-set thriller for the ILH’s final spot in the state tournament, end at No. 3 after winning the state championship a season ago.

The Trojans finish No. 4 ahead of No. 5 Moanalua and No. 6 Kamehameha-Hawaii.

Kapolei takes over sole possession of seventh place in the poll ahead of No. 8 Kahuku, which the Hurricanes were tied with last week.

Le Jardin is No. 9 and King Kekaulike shares the No. 10 spot with Division II state champion Damien, which finished the year 16-1.

Waianae (five) was the only other team to receive votes.
