Alabama junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa underwent surgery today on his injured ankle suffered in Saturday’s 35-13 win over Tennessee.
The 2017 Saint Louis alumnus and Heisman Trophy finalist from a year ago was hurt on a sack from behind in the second quarter. He suffered a high-ankle sprain and did not return to the game.
In a statement released to the media today, Alabama coach Nick Saban said, “Tua Tagovailoa suffered a high-ankle sprain last night against Tennessee. Our physicians performed a successful tight-rope procedure on his right ankle this morning. This is the same injury, but the opposite ankle that Tua injured last season. Tua will miss next week’s game against Arkansas, but we expect a full and speedy recovery.”
Tagovailoa had the same surgery last year on his other ankle after injuring it in the SEC championship game against Georgia. He was able to play 28 days later in a win over Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff.
Alabama has a bye week after the Arkansas game on Saturday and will then play LSU, which would be exactly three weeks after Tagovailoa suffered the injury against the Vols.
Tagovailoa is completing 74.7 percent (145-for-194) of his passes for 2,166 yards and 27 touchdowns with two picks this season. He’s also rushed for two TD’s.
He began the week as the front-runner in the Heisman Trophy race.
