More than 50 Hawaii high school graduates are currently listed on mainland Division I women’s soccer rosters with 10 men’s soccer players from Hawaii representing seven different Division I schools.
In the latest women’s soccer rankings by Top Draw Soccer, No. 7 Washington State jumped two spots after beating Oregon State 2-1 on Saturday in its Pac-12 opener. Junior forward Makamae Gomera-Stevens (Kamehameha ’17) scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute for the Cougars, who are 8-1 overall.
Vanderbilt senior goalkeeper Taiana Tolleson (Konawaena ’16) will be featured in Wednesday’s Hawaii Grown section in the Star-Advertiser. Tolleson is 5-1 in goal this season with 13 saves for the Commodores (8-3), who are ranked No. 23 this week.

How about some props and recognition for the women who are at home repping for our own D-1 program? Glorifying in this article only the ones who went away implies being on the mainland is somehow more praise worthy.
Mahalo to the local girls playing for University of Hawaii Wahine Soccer Team!
Taylor Caporus – Frosh, Roosevelt
Daelenn Tokunaga – Soph, Pearl City
Tia Futuna – Jr, Mililani
Kelci Sumida – Fr, Moanalua
Kayla Watanabe – Sr, MPI, (U of Idaho transfer)
There, fixed it. You’re welcome.
CORRECTION: Tia Furuta, Jr, Mililani.
Sorry, spellcheck typo 🙁
We have a whole website dedicated specifically to the University of Hawaii and those girls in particular.
If you’re interested, here are a few recent stories of the Wahine soccer team: https://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/category/Soccer/
Mahalo for reading!
Ahhhhh man, too much?
LOL. If they come up spitting fire, they should expect to get burned a LITTO bit.
its all G. Keep it coming with all the good stuff you guys do. It is appreciated. Truly.
Two more for the list:
Nick Shor, UC San Diego, FR, GK
Kupaa Fernandez, Gonzaga, FR, MF
Thanks, Update. Looks like Kupaa graduated from a school in Minnesota and UCSD is D-II in men’s soccer.
Yes Kupa’a Fernandez graduates from a school in Minnesota after playing his Freshman year at Konawaena.
UCSD is moving all of it’s teams to Div 1 next season and are going through the transition during this season.
Kupaa grew up in Kona Hi and moved to Minnesota to train at a soccer academy. His school’s bio lists him from Kona Hawaii and not Minnesota.
How about updates regarding former UH alumni who have gone on to pursue professional careers? Raisa Strom-Okimoto / Sonest Furtado??
