GAME NIGHT 8/31: Kaimuki/Waialua

Kaimuki 61, Waialua 7, FINAL

Kaimuki dominates, though they did have 14 penalties for 161 yards.

New QB in for Kaimuki, Phillip Phomphakdy.

After taking possession, the visitors need just five plays to score again. Maiava scrambles in the pocket and scores on a 1-yard run. KAIMUKI 61, WAIALUA 7, Q4, 7:39.

A bit of a skirmish at the end of a nice 45-yard kickoff return by Hoekstra. A conduct call on one player from each team. Then Dicion scrambles for a gain, loses the ball and it is Kaimuki ball at its 41 as the quarter ends. However, there’s some confusion. A Waialua player is ejected for throwing a punch.

Dicion started last week against Vincent Massey, normally playing LB, but moved to QB and led the Bulldogs to the win. He has Waialua moving on offense, but his deep pass is picked off by Avin Tanioka and returned 36 yards to the Kaimuki 44. Kaimuki needs just two plays, both carries by Asuega-Fualaau, to hit the jackpot again. He rumbles for 21 yards, then breaks off left tackle for a 35-yard TD, his first of the game. Another high snap on the PAT, pass incomplete. KAIMUKI 54, WAIALUA 7, Q3, 1:21.

The new QB for Waialua, Kyler Dicion, doesn’t see the snap from his center, and the ball is recovered in the end zone by Tasi Komiti for a Kaimuki TD. KAIMUKI 48, WAIALUA 7, Q3, 6:13.

Kaimuki churning out yardage, and a 41-yard TD pass from Maiava to Kaluna is wiped out by a holding call. Tack on a personal foul and the visitors are back at their 31. Asuega-Fualaau rumbles for 18 yards and Kaimuki is in Waialua territory again. Now a delay as the head official and Kaimuki coach David Tautofi have a conversation. Asuega-Fualaau is bulldozing defenders like Earl Campbell tonight, but his TD run is called back by a hold. Maiava launches a spiral to the left corner of the end zone, and Moananu races under it for a 15-yard TD. That’s Maiava’s fifth TD toss of the game. KAIMUKI 41, MOANALUA 7, Q3, 7:47.

Kaimuki has been balanced offensively, often chewing off chunks of yardage against a game Waialua defense. The visitors have 12 rushes for 116 yards, and Maiava is 11-for-15, 206 yards and four TDs with no picks. No turnovers in the first 24 minutes for the visitors.

KJ Navarez’s PAT run is good. Waialua’s ensuing series goes nowhere as Kaimuki’s pass rush continues to dominate. Kaimuki finishes the first half with sacks by KJ Navarez, Ashleigh Nahina, Tevita Loketi, Fa‘asoa and Tasi Komiti. KAIMUKI 34, WAIALUA 7, Q2, 1:45.

Waialua has its best starting field position of the game and needs just four plays to score. Storm Quilinderino picks up 20 yards off left tackle. Lacar then pumps and launches an easy 19-yard TD pass to Kamu Lorenzo near the right pylon in the end zone. KAIMUKI 26, WAIALUA 7, Q2, 4:14.

Waialua’s fifth punt is out of bounds, a 43-yarder. Kaimuki ball at its 24 with 8:59 left in the first half. Kaimuki begins this possession with three consecutive penalties. All that minus yardage kills the drive, and Waialua takes over after Kaimuki’s first punt goes out of bounds at the visitors’ 48-yard line with 5:55 left in the first half. Kaimuki’s ironmen are not machines and they may be tiring a bit. But Waialua bails the visitors out with a time out.

Another Waialua punt, and Kaimuki takes over at its 35. On the ensuing play, Maiava launches down the hashmarks to Kaluna, who evades a shoestring tackle attempt, regains his balance and scores on a 65-yard TD. High snap on the PAT, pass is completed but short of the goal line. KAIMUKI 26, WAIALUA 0, Q2, 10:49.

The first quarter ends with Kaimuki ahead 20-0. Kai Hoekstra’s 36-yard kickoff return gives Waialua the ball at the Kaimuki 47. Waialua still playing without five starters due to injury. It didn’t stop them last week in the win over Vincent Massey (Canada), but the bigger, physical Kaimuki Bulldogs are a different breed.

The Bulldogs have their best series yet, but stalls at the Kaimuki 43. Another punt. Kaimuki begins at its 25 after an illegal block on the return. They drive to the Waialua 8, getting a 29-yard pass from Maiava to Koby Moananu. After a Waialua time out, Maiava goes play-action and finds Kaluna again for an 8-yard TD. Kai Hoekstra blocks the PAT. KAIMUKI 20, WAIALUA 0, Q1, :36.

Waialua’s offense goes three-and-out, and Kaimuki responds with a smashmouth drive right down the field. Despite two personal fouls on Kaimuki during the punt return, they go 89 yards in nine plays. Jayden Maiava connects with Kaulana Kaluna for a 27-yard TD. Very nice post route. KAIMUKI 14, WAIALUA 0, Q1, 6:35.

Opening series, Waialua QB Justyce Lacar is picked off by LB Sione Taufa, who returns the ball 40 yards for a pick-6. KAIMUKI 7, WAIALUA 0, Q1, 11:26.

Sunny and breezy at the coin toss. Kaimuki in white tops, kelly green helmets and pants. Classic. Waialua in their sharp, funky black jerseys with white numbers, red sleeves, red helmets. Pants are black and red with a diagonal white stripe separating black and red.

Waialua wins the coin toss and elects to receive. Waialua’s band did another stupendous job on the national anthem, Hawaii Pono‘i. They’re a Top 5 band in the state as far as football games go. Well done.

5:25 p.m.
No JV game. Waialua and Kaimuki dropped their JV teams during preseason.
