Kahuku alum Alohi Gilman and Saint Louis product Tua Tagovailoa were both named to the Associated Press preseason All-America second team released today.

Gilman is entering his senior season at Notre Dame, where he emerged as a leader in the Irish secondary after transferring from Navy. In his junior season, the safety started all 13 games and recorded 95 tackles with three tackles for loss, five pass break-ups, two interceptions and three forced fumbles.

Gilman’s younger brother, Alaka’i, is a senior safety at Punahou and is committed to play for Washington State next fall.

Tagovailoa heads into his junior season at Alabama as the Heisman Trophy runner-up during his sophomore campaign. In 2018, he threw for 3,966 yards and 43 touchdowns, both program records for the Crimson Tide.

Taulia Tagovailoa, former Kapolei quarterback and Tua’s younger brother, is a freshman quarterback for Alabama.

Both Gilman and Tagovailoa had their seasons end in losses to Clemson during the college football playoff.

Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence was named to the AP All-America first team ahead of Tagovailoa.

Notre Dame, which was ranked No. 9 in the AP preseason poll, opens its season at Louisville on Sept. 2. No. 2 Alabama opens against Duke on Aug. 31.

Good job to both young men, but for all you parents that think your kids need a private school to make College DI All American. Here is your proof! Hard work, good grades and commitment will help you get anywhere.

Good job you two. Shock the voters and do what we know you can do…be the first team.
