Hugh Brady’s senior football season is over.
His father, Shawn, confirmed that the right knee injury sustained by his son in Friday’s Open Division matchup against Farrington is an ACL tear.
“He’s really bummed about it all, but he knows this happens to a lot of guys and you can come back. He’ll be fine,” Shawn Brady said.
Hugh Brady was in prime position to guide the No. 2 Punahou Buffanblu. He was 8-for-9 with 74 passing yards at the time of the injury, which occurred with 7:31 left in the second quarter. Though the contact with a Farrington defender was not extreme, there was immediate concern. The results of the MRI were released this morning.
“It’s a clean tear. We just saw his doctor this morning,” Shawn Brady said. “Every day it feels better and better. The surgeon said probably in a week or two, you’ll be walking around as if nothing happened, but that has nothing to do with running or cutting. The surgeon’s point is that if you need to feed your family, you could go without the surgery. But if you repair it once correctly, you’re going to be fine (athletically).”
With freshman quarterback John-Keawe Sagapolutele thrust into action, Punahou won the game, 31-0, and remained at No. 2 in the new Star-Advertiser Top 10 released today. Surgery is roughly two weeks away. Brady is walking without major pain.
“He’s devastated about not helping his friends and his school. He just needs to fix it, move on and he’ll be back at 100 percent in six to nine months,” Shawn Brady said. “They’ll start very aggressive with the rehab probably within a month. He can do upper-body (weight) training within a month. He can throw in a couple of months. Jog again within three or four months.”
A chat with coaches from Penn, which offered Brady a roster spot in the offseason, buoyed his spirit. Brady will be at practice this afternoon.
“The guy who is recruiting him out of Penn had his ACL injury in sophomore year at college. They’re fully committed to (Hugh). They’re more concerned with head and shoulder injuries,” Shawn Brady said. “They said you can use this as a learning tool and become a better football player by watching and learning, coaching up the guys around you.”

Dang, Punahou is talented but will not win the ILH with a freshman QB. No offense to the kid cause he’s good.
^^^ Yup, throwing a freshman QB into the fire against the defenses of St. Louis, Kahuku, Mililani, etc. is a huge risk. It also doesn’t say much about the older Punahou QBs who got beat out by a freshman for the backup job.
People will be surprise at what this freshmen QB is capable of doing on the field. There are a number of us parents (Fathers) that watch our sons practice and been very impressed with our freshmen QB from the first day they took the field. With how strong St. Louis is across the board, possibly, we would not win with our senior qb either, we’ll never know🤷🏻♂️. But let’s give our freshmen QB a chance and enjoy the ride. We pray for Hugh’s recovery and hopes he gets well soon!!!
Leave it to a loser like Falcon to re-direct the narrative to critiquing the back up QBs at Punahou when the story is about Hugh’s ACL injury and how his senior season is over despite all the hard work he put in to this Punahou football team and all the sacrifices that he made into making himself a better QB. He’s going to play at UPenn next year and there nothing the haters can do to stop that. Falcon misses the point as usual because he’s more concerned about disrespecting a specific player or 2 than he is about adding to the discussion. I doubt this clown ever played a down of football at any level because he has no respect for the game or understanding of how difficult it can be. Btw did your kid ever play ?
