GAME NIGHT 8/3: Punahou/Kailua

No. 2 Punahou 40, Kailua 0, FINAL

8:09: After a fumble recovery, the Surfriders call two timeouts to try two last plays from the Punahou 10 with 15.7 seconds left but to no avail. Punahou completes the shutout and wins 40-0.

8:04: The running clock is making the quarter run smoothly. Kailua is driving but quarterback Cameron Friel is picked off by Gavin Duncan. The Buffanblu get the ball back with a little over two minutes left and look to run out the clock.

FOURTH QUARTER


7:52: Brady’s day is done. Backup Ian Eveleth enters and completes his first two passes before getting picked off by Kala’i Cardin-Kiaha.

7:39: Kanoa Kalahiki hauls in a 10-yard touchdown from Brady on fourth-and-goal. Maretzki’s kick is good. Punahou’s lead is now 40-0, and the running clock is in effect with 9:08 to go in the third.

7:33: Oof. Alaka’i Gilman drops a potential pick-six. Kailua will punt instead. The buffanblu will start from the Kailua 40.

7:30: The second half is underway. Kailua looks for its first score, starting from its own 19.

THIRD QUARTER

7:11: Kailua runs out the clock and trails 33-0 at halftime. The Surfriders will receive the second half kickoff in a game that doesn’t feel as lopsided as the score. Just a matter of one team making all the plays.

7:08: After two incompletions, Brady finds Terrell for a 20-yard score. Maretzki’s kick is good. Punahou leads 33-0 with 1:10 left in the first half. Any type of score for Punahou would set up the running clock. Brady watch: 10-17, 240 yards, 4 TD’s.

7:05: Kailua runs for three straight plays, while Punahou calls three straight timeouts. After a tipped punt, the Buffanblu have 1:29 to score from the Kailua 20.

6:51: Approaching ugly territory. Brady finds Dancil-Evans for another score, this time from 11 yards out. Maretzki’s PAT is good. 26-0 Punahou. Brady so far: 9-14, 220 yards, three touchdowns.

6:47: Kailua punts again. Punahou will take over from the Surfriders’ 36 with 5:33 left in the half.

6:43: Facing third-and-20 from their own 10, Brady finds Raydan Kiaania-Caires for a 90-YARD TOUCHDOWN. Brady is 5-for-9 with two touchdowns and 187 yards so far, boosted big time by those two big plays. Kick is no good and the Punahou lead is 19-0 with 7:49 left in the half.

6:39: Kailua can’t pick up another first down and punts to the Punahou 20, 9:15 left in the second.


SECOND QUARTER

6:34: End of the first. Punahou leads 13-0, but Kailua has a fresh set of downs on its own 44.

6:28: Kailua lines up for a field goal but the snap is muffed and there’s no attempt. Punahou recovers the fumble on its own 30 with 53 seconds left in the first.

6:23: Kailua’s D forces another three-and-out. The Surfriders take over from the Punahou 35 after a shanked punt.

6:19: Three-and-out for Kailua. Punahou takes over from its own 20 with 4:05 left in the first.

6:17: Kailua’s defense holds tough and forces a Punahou three-and-out. Surfriders take over from their own 37 with 5:13 left in the first.

6:12: The Buffanblu just continue to make big plays, this time forcing a Kailua fumble and taking over at the Surfriders’ 44.

6:07: WOW. On Punahou’s first offensive play from scrimmage, Hugh Brady and Moku Dancil-Evans connect for an 82-yard score. Quinn Maretzki‘s PAT is good and it’s 13-0 Punahou with 8:09 left in the first.

6:06: Kailua picks up a couple of first downs but punts from the Punahou 38. Buffanblu to start from their own 18 with 8:23 left in the first.

5:59: Vincent Terrell takes the opening kickoff TO THE HOUSE for Punahou, 95-yard TD. The PAT is blocked, but just like that, it’s 6-0 Punahou.

FIRST QUARTER


5:57 p.m.: And here we go. Punahou will receive to start this game.
