Kamehameha junior Tanner Moku is the Gatorade Hawaii boys track and field athlete of the year, the Gatorade Company announced Monday.
The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the track.
Moku, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior, won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.54 seconds and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 38.72 at the state championship meet in May.
Moku also set a state-meet record of 38.07 in the preliminaries of the 300 hurdles, and he also ran legs on the third-place 4×100 relay and the sixth-place 4×400 quartet.
He has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics and youth track programs.
“Tanner’s dedication to excellence and his commitment to his team are truly what set him apart,” Kamehameha coach JP Plencner said in a news release. “He’s had to overcome adversity (on the track) time and time again and he takes the setbacks in stride and keeps a positive attitude.”
Moku has maintained a 3.13 GPA in the classroom, according to the release.
