Kamehameha’s Tanner Moku upset Baldwin’s Rey Cadiz for the 110-meter hurdles title at the Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, Maui.
Moku finished in 14.54 seconds and won a close race with a late kick. Cadiz ran a 14.60.
Cadiz was the defending champion, finishing last year’s trials in 14.20. He broke that record in Friday’s trials — 14.19.
The two will do battle against each other along with other competitors later in the 300 hurdles.
Moku set the 300 hurdles state-meet record in Friday’s trials — 38.07, and his personal best is 37.99.
“I just had it in my mind … focus on my race,” Moku said. “If I just focus on lane 5 and not on lane 4 or lane 6 or lane 2, just my race. That was great. Never had someone push me like that whole season. It was crazy, man.”
TAGOVAILOA TAKES DISCUS THROW WITH A 129-5 PR
Damien’s Zada Tagolailoa saved her best for last, winning the discus throw at the Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships on Saturday.
Tagovailoa, a cousin of Alabama quarterbacks Tua and Taulia Tagovailoa, had a winning distance of 129 feet, 5 inches, a personal best. It is also ended as the best in Hawaii this year. She previously threw a 125-10.5.
Intermittent showers in the early afternoon turned to steady and relatively light rain by 3:52 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku.
Opening ceremonies are slated for 4:15 p.m., with running events beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Finals in six field events were held Friday. Those winners were: Kamehemeha-Hawaii’s Chenoa Frederick in the long jump (18-2.75), Waipahu’s Jocelyn Saribay in the shot put (37-11), Baldwin’s Tianna Powell in the pole vault (11-9), Saint Louis’ Korvin Feagins in the high jump (6-7), Kaimuki’s Antrone Cliff in the triple jump (44-6.25), and Punahou’s Kennedy Freeman in the discus (151-9).
