The options for life on the mainland were there, but Kameron Ng is ready for the next chapter.
“It’s a new beginning,” the St. Francis senior basketball standout said Monday after committing to Hawaii.
At UH, the Star-Advertiser All-State player of the year will walk on. He had a similar opportunity with Portland, which had coaches at St. Francis working Ng out recently. Former ‘Iolani center Hugh Hogland, another former player of the year, plays at Portland. Ng also had an opportunity to play at a prep school on the East Coast.
Going to college, playing at home, building on his friendships and relationships with players at coaches at Hawaii — mattered more to Ng. Younger brother Kordel Ng, he added, has not determined where he will finish high school. With St. Francis closing its doors at the end of this school year, Kordel Ng is looking at Kamehameha, Punahou and Kahuku.
Ng, a 5-foot-11 guard who averaged 24 points per game as a senior despite an ankle injury, chatted with Hawaii Prep World on Monday morning.
Side note: Any thoughts on Matthew Saltman’s return home this summer to workout on Oahu rather than staying up in Portland to continue to elevate his game?
Recent articles on this very website were saying this kid had solid offers – not interest – OFFERS from D1s, D2s, and NAIAs. There was never any proof. But now the script is being flipped to make as if a 5’9″ guard turned down those offers for a walk-on spot because he would’ve rather played for home team? Come on now, I find that hard to believe.
He DECIDED to stay and attend UH. Committing to a college is based on being offered a scholarship. He will walk-on the court and try to make the team as a non-scholarship or invited player.

Sounds like someone who “decides” to go public school after they found out they never get into Punahou.
