Punahou’s Sina Uluave, Kamehameha’s Kawika Clemente and three relay teams notched the best Hawaii track and field marks of 2019 so far on Saturday.
Uluave added two inches to her personal best and won the shot put at the Punahou Relays on Saturday with a throw of 38 feet, 7 inches.
“I was focused on getting that PR,” Uluave said. “You practice and practice, but it’s not the same adrenaline rush as the meet. Right now, I’m focusing on making my release better in the discus and just getting stronger on the shot.”
That 38-7 is nearly a foot better than the next closest in Hawaii in 2019. Damien’s Zada Tagovailoa is at 37-8.5.
Uluave also won the discus Saturday — 119.0.5, ahead of Tagovailoa, but Tagovailoa still has the top mark for 2019 — 121-4.
“I’ve been throwing for three years and that whole time she has been my competitor,” Uluave said about Tagovailoa. “We push each other.”
With a 22-6.25 in a long jump victory Saturday, Kamehameha’s Clemente surpassed his previous top 2019 Hawaii mark of 22-4.25.
Three Punahou relay teams notched the best 2019 times in Hawaii: Stevie Marvin, Grace Blanchette, Kaylie Klausing and Lexi Lowery in the girls 4×100-meter preliminaries (50.17 seconds) Friday; Kayla Almeida, Maiya Fujiwara, Allie Little and Kaila Ronquilio in the girls 4×400 (4:08.31); and David Rosen, Vincent Terrell, Chris Paige and Justin Pu‘u-Robinson in the boys 4×400 (3:24:34).
Korvin Feagins of Saint Louis missed his three attempts at a personal-best 6-7 in the high jump, but still won the event at 6-3.
He’s working on taking a shot at the state-meet mark of 6-9.
“My second attempt at 6-7, I almost got it, but my calf hit,” Feagins said.
Feagins watches a high jumper from Qatar, Mutaz Essah Barshim, to mimic.
“Last time I checked, he was at 7-6 or something,” Feagins said. “I am working on my form. I want to bend my back a little more and work on my legs to jump higher.”
Said Saint Louis coach Alexander Fonseca about Feagins: “Last year was his first year of high jump. He had never high jumped in his life. He said, ‘Coach I want to high jump.’ We said OK and started to notice some things … he’s not bad. Then he qualified for states and we got excited and then he placed second. In the first event of this year, he got 6-6 and that’s something he could not get last year. He’s been so driven this year as a senior, willing to take advice and make adjustments and do everything he needs to do. He’s trusting in me and he’s trusting in his form and skill and that has really taken him over the top this year.”
Feagins and teammates Keanu Wallace, Roman Wilson and Keola Yadao thought they had a meet record time of 42.84 in the 4-x-100 preliminaries Friday, but meet officials on Saturday found that time to be a mistake. The team’s new official time was not available.
That squad, with Trenton Wailehua instead of Wilson, has the best time so far in 2019 — 42.20, which is two-tenths of a second slower than the state-meet mark.
Two Waiakea boys kept the bar going higher and higher in the pole vault. After the other competitors dropped off, Eric Cabais Fernandez and Deylan Okinaka got up to 13-9.
Then, Cabais Fernandez made 14-3 to win it, but fell short on three tries at 14-9, which would have bettered his personal best by two inches.
J. Kai Yamafuji of Punahou — who vaulted 16-0 (which is Hawaii’s best ever at any level) last year — is up to 15-1 this season, but did not compete Saturday due to a shin problem.
