For the defending ILH softball champion Maryknoll Spartans, the 2019 season has been a wild ride.
Ranked as high as No. 2 at one point this season, the Spartans nearly fell out of the top 10 last week only to bounce back to No. 6 in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 released today.
The Spartans have won four in a row to climb within 1 1/2 games of league-leading Punahou with two games remaining in the ILH regular season.
Maryknoll opened the year with a win over Punahou and then mercy-ruled St. Francis as part of a 5-1 start. Back-to-back losses to Punahou and St. Francis knocked the Spartans down to a tie for ninth in the rankings last week before the jump back up.
The five teams ahead of the Spartans in the rankings are all the same as the previous week with Campbell holding on to the No. 1 spot for the sixth consecutive week, followed by Punahou, Roosevelt, ‘Iolani and Leilehua.
The Sabers received eight first-place votes with the Buffanblu and the Rough Riders each receiving one.
Mid-Pacific fell a spot to No. 7 and Mililani rose a spot to No. 8 with St. Francis at No. 9.
Kamehameha-Hawaii entered the rankings at No. 10 this week to become the first team from the neighbor islands ranked in the top 10 all season.
