Six high school track and field athletes catapulted into 2019’s “Best in Hawaii” category in recent meets:
>> Mililani senior Mackenzie Reed ran the 400-meter dash in 58.76, bettering her 59.28 earlier this season. The state-meet mark is 54.41.
>> Damien junior Zada Tagovailoa added one inch to her previous best in the discus this season and is now at 121 feet, four inches. The state-meet record is 160-3.
>> Saint Louis senior Korvin Feagins upped 2019’s best with a 6-7 in the high jump. He previously had a 6-6. The state-meet record is 6-9.
>> Punahou senior Maiya Fujiwara ran a 2:18.46 in the 800 to surpass 2019’s previous best — 2:22.81 by Seabury Hall’s Chloe Gangnath. The state-meet record is 2:13.03.
>> McKinley junior Narayana Schneider ran 4:00.61 in the 1,500 meters, bettering his previous best for 2019 — 4:04.23.
>> Punahou’s J. Kai Yamafuji is up to 15-1 in the pole vault, incrementally better than his 15-0 earlier this season. Yamafuji has the best pole vault mark ever, at any level, in Hawaii at 16-0 (set in April 2018). He won the state title last year with a 14-4. The state-meet record is 15-3.
One relay team also recorded the fastest Hawaii mark for 2019. Punahou’s 4×100 team of Stevie Marvin, Grace Blanchette, Kaylie Klausing and Lexie Lowery ran a 50.67. The best previously this season was by Punahou in 51.17, with Kaila Ronquilio instead of Marvin. The state-meet mark is 48.35.
Punahou sophomore Chris Paige made a noteworthy effort in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 39.54. That’s just five one-hundredths of a second slower than Rey Cadiz‘s 39.49 for Baldwin. Cadiz, a senior, is the state-meet record-holder in the 110 hurdles (14.20). The 300 hurdles state-meet mark is 38.10.
An OIA Western Division Championship meet record nearly went down on Saturday in the 300 hurdles, when Radford senior Michael Edwards ran a 40.19, slightly slower than Al Washington of Radford’s 40.1 (handheld) in 1994.
Two eighth-graders — Damien’s Tatum Moku and ‘Iolani’s Lexi King — are doing amazing things.
Moku set an ILH intermediate championship meet record with an 11-3 in the pole vault. Moku won the pole vault — against high schoolers — at the Cal Track Ruby Tuesday Invitational in late March with a vault of 11 feet.
King’s 5-2 in the high jump earlier this season is better than any Hawaii high schooler so far. She was also a winner at the Ruby Tuesday meet, when she jumped 5-1.
If King can gain an inch every year for her four years of high school, she can break Natasha Kai‘s state-meet record of 5-5 set in 1999.
