Noah Payne of Seabury Hall ran a superb 100-meter dash, finishing in 10.70 seconds at the Cal Track Ruby Tuesday Invitational on Saturday at Moanalua.
“I ran a 10.79 at the Yamamoto Invitational last week,” Payne said. “Wind (behind the runners’ backs) was a factor today. But I feel like I ran pretty good and there’s a lot of competition over here. That was really pushing me. I was relaxed. I knew (Saint Louis’) Roman (Wilson) was going to be there right with me, so I just kind of wanted to run my race and stay relaxed.
“I feel like I’m going to get faster as the year progresses. I just want to keep P.R.ing and see where that takes me.”
Payne took down a pretty big name at the Yamamoto, eclipsing Shane Victorino‘s mark from way back in 1999. On Saturday he took down Christian Padron of Damien, besting his 10.80 in 2017. Wilson won the event last year as a sophomore with an 11.07. Payne did not compete in the event last year and finished 11th at the state meet with a time of 11.41, 11 hundredths of a second away from qualifying for the final.
Wilson, a wide receiver on the Saint Louis football team with multiple Division-I offers, finished second in 10.73, just two-hundredths of a second behind Payne. Crusaders teammate Keola Yadao took third in 10.83.
The state meet will take place May 3-4 at War Memorial Stadium on Maui. Last year’s winning time in the 100-meter dash was 10.85 seconds by Punahou’s Andrei Iosivas.
Padron set a non-wind aided state record of 10.63 seconds in 2017. Kapolei’s Devin Jenkins ran a wind-aided 10.46 seconds in 2011 that is the fastest time in state history.
