Kamehameha’s Kalina Obrey is the Gatorade Hawaii girls basketball player of the year, the Gatorade Company announced recently.

The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field.

A 5-foot-10 senior forward, Obrey led the Warriors to an 18-7 record and an appearance in the Division I state final — a 52-49 heartbreaker to ‘Iolani.

Obrey’s 29-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer was ultimately ruled no good because the shot didn’t leave her hands until time ran out. The tying 3-point attempt was first ruled good with an overtime period to come, but then after a conference by the referees, the final ruling was made.

Obrey averaged 18.5 points, 8-2 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game. She was also picked as the ILH player of the year and was a three-time league first-team pick.

Obrey has a 3.63 GPA and has volunteered locally on behalf of a church thrift store and youth basketball programs, according to a news release.

“I haven’t seen a player at Obrey’s position play with that array of skills and such a constant motor,” Sacred Hearts coach Richard Kasuya said. That’s a rare combination that made her special.

Obrey is also up for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State player of the year award that will be released in Sunday’s newspaper and on Hawaii Prep World.
