Week 3 has a third different leader atop the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10.
‘Iolani, which had a bye all week, collected half of the 10 first-place votes and outpointed last week’s leader, Punahou, for the No. 1 spot today. The Raiders (6-0) will play Farrington on Tuesday in the opening round of the ‘Iolani Prep Classic.
Punahou (11-1) has won nine games in a row since losing to Damien on Nov. 25. The Buffanblu swept through the St. Francis Holiday Hoops Classic over the weekend with wins over Kahuku (92-54), Lahainaluna (74-46) and host St. Francis (87-55). The Buffanblu host Kamehameha-Hawaii on Wednesday in the opener of the Punahou Invitational.
Maryknoll (11-0) moved up one notch to No. 3 after capturing the Kaimuki Invitational title. The Spartans have not permitted more than 46 points in a game. They ousted Radford (54-43), Mililani (47-46) and Kamehameha (60-35). Maryknoll will face Radford on Wednesday at the Punahou Invitational.
Damien (10-1) dropped one spot to No. 4 after finishing third at the St. Francis tourney. The Monarchs began the season at No. 1, but their Division II label has cast a negative response from some of the voting panel. Damien beat Kailua, lost to St. Francis, and defeated Lahainaluna at the tournament. The Monarchs host Hanalani on Tuesday in their ILH D-II opener.
St. Francis (9-6) moved up a notch to No. 5 after reaching the final of its tournament. The busy Saints also reached the final of the Walter Wong Invitational, losing to Saint Louis 68-64 in overtime.
Moanalua (4-3), Mid-Pacific (3-1), Kalaheo (7-7), Saint Louis (7-0) and Kamehameha (8-3) round out the Top 10.
Saint Louis is in the poll for the first time this season. The Crusaders took their Walter Wong Invitational title, edging St. Francis in the title game.
Kahuku (nine), Kailua (seven), Waiakea (four), Roosevelt (three) and Lahainaluna (one) also received votes.

This week’s rankings is a good example how it serves no advantage to a D1 school to play a D2 in pre season. Without that loss to Damien, Punahou is #1 no question. I realize in tournaments there are a mix of D1/D2 teams but if I’m a D1 team, I’m only other D1 teams. That way, you don’t give these D2 teams who should be playing up these wins that media and coaches give them brownie points the entire season for.
