No. 10 ‘Iolani surprises No. 3 Kamehameha

The Cardiac Raiders have done it again.

Andrew Skalman drilled a 30-yard field goal with 14 seconds left as 10th-ranked ‘Iolani upset No. 3 Kamehameha 20-17 last night at breezy Aloha Stadium.

Skalman’s field goal, his second of the game, gave Division II ‘Iolani its second win over a D-I powerhouse in as many years. Last season, the Raiders surprised then-No. 1 Saint Louis 35-30.

This time, they did it with timely plays on a night when Kamehameha’s sterling defense dictated most of the action. The Raiders trailed 9-0, rallied to take a 17-9 lead in the second half, and with the game tied at 17, drove from their 29-yard line to the Kamehameha 2 with less than a minute left.

A holding call on second and goal pushed ‘Iolani back, and after two incomplete passes, Skalman lined up from the left hashmark. His kick split the uprights with plenty to spare.

“It’s just practice and repetitions, attention to detail that the coaches teach us,” said Skalman, who prefers kicking from the right hashmark. “We just believed in each other, in our coaches, all week long.”

Damien had trouble tracking down Punahou receiver Jeff Pedrina tonight.

No. 9 Punahou 51, Damien 6, final

Kaiana Eldredge’s breakout game included four first-half touchdown passes as the Buffanblu overwhelmed the Monarchs.

Eldredge was 10-for-16 and 221 yards with no interceptions. Running back Stabren Caires rushed for 121 yards on 16 carries and caught a scoring pass.

Punahou improved to 2-2 and is 1-0 in ILH play.

Division-II Damien dropped to 0-3 and is 0-1 in the ILH.

Four punt blocks by Punahou, including three by safety Brian Suite, also derailed Damien.

Suite’s first block led led to a 34-yard touchdown pass from Eldredge to Forrest Kim on the ensuing play with 2:51 left in the first quarter.

A punt block by Steven Lakalaka at midfield led to a 23-yard catch and run to the end zone by Caires, and Punahou led 14-0 with 8:44 left in the second quarter.

Punahou scored three touchdowns in the final 4 minutes of the half. Eldredge found Jeff Pedrina on a post route for a 60-yard touchdown play, with a big block from wide receiver Matthew Parrish.

A punt block by Suite bounced out of the end zone for a safety, giving Punahou a 23-0 lead.

Parrish then caught a 15-yard bullet from Eldredge in the end zone for a 30-0 Punahou lead with 1:22 remaining before halftime.

Another punt block by Suite led to a 15-yard return for a touchdown by Kyle Tu‘umalo early in the third quarter.

Damien scored on quarterback Breysen Lee’s 1-yard sneak with 1 minute left in the third, capping a 13-play, 68-yard drive.

Eldredge’s final pass, a 30-yard touchdown to reserve wide receiver Malik Johnson off a deflected pass, gave the Buffanblu a 44-6 lead with 10:03 remaining.

Backup running back Ikaika Nawahine had three impressive carries in the final series for Punahou, including an 8-yard burst for a touchdown with 2:30 left.

Ikaika Mokiau, a senior, led Damien with 124 rushing yards on 20 carries.

Kaeo Aliviado of Saint Louis had 102 yards receiving on four catches last night.

No. 1 Saint Louis 62, Pac-Five 24, final

Pac-Five started strong, but Saint Louis rallied from a 10-point deficit with six consecutive first-half touchdowns.

Jeremy Higgins played only one half and was 22-for-29 with five touchdowns and 304 yards. Three of the incompletions were drops.

P.J. Minaya, who had guided the Wolfpack offense to an average of nearly 52 points per game, struggled after a hot start. The senior finished 15-for-37 with two touchdowns, three picks and 196 yards.

One of his favorite targets, London Amorin, had eight catches for 131 yards. The other favorite, Darin Kamealoha, did not play due to injury.

After six catches for 101 yards in the first half, Amorin was limited to two receptions in the second half.

“Playing the No. 1 team, we can learn from our mistakes,” Amorin said. “Their defensive line was a major factor.”

Vonn Feao’s 9-yard burst into the end zone had given the Saints their first lead of the game at sunny Aloha Stadium. The touchdown capped an 11-play, 68-play drive and gave Saint Louis a 21-17 lead with 10 seconds left in the first quarter.

Higgins later connected with Kaeo Aliviado for a 30-yard scoring play, and after an interception by Saint Louis safety Zach Kawamoto, the Crusaders scored again just before intermission.

Higgins found Shaun Ahlo on a fourth-and-five pass, but Ahlo was short of the first down and scrambled from the left side of the hashmarks all the way to the other sideline en route to a 17-yard touchdown play. That gave the Saints a 35-17 lead with 1:25 remaining in the half.

After a Caleb Yuen interception — P.J. Minaya’s third of the half — Aliviado hauled in a 39-yard touchdown pass from Higgins with 4 seconds left in the half.

The shootout was on from the start. With both teams firing away out of their run-and-shoot offenses, it felt more like like an Arena football game.

Pac-Five zoomed to a 10-0 lead on Minaya’s 6-yard pass to Everett Kim on the Wolfpack’s opening drive.

A fumble by Saint Louis running back Sean Valente was recovered at the Saints 33-yard line by Kaimi Kanehailua. That led to a 33-yard field goal by Brendan Sagucio with less than 6 minutes left in the opening quarter.

By then, 18 of the first 21 plays had been snapped by Pac-Five, but the tide turned as Saint Louis’ defense found ways to frazzle Minaya, a nifty scrambler.

Higgins found Jordan Fukumoto open on an out pattern for a 5-yard touchdown pass to bring the Saints within 10-7 with 1:51 to go in the first quarter.

Three plays later, Pac-Five responded with a 64-yard catch-and-run by London Amorin.

Saint Louis’ offense couldn’t be stopped, however. Higgins hit Tupua for a quick wide-receiver screen, and the junior went 32 yards for a touchdown. That brought the Saints within 17-14 with 10 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Crusaders scored six touchdowns in their last six possessions of the half. Marcus Mariota took over at quarterback in the second half.

Tupua left the game with a leg injury late in the first half.

Damien meets No. 9 Punahou and No. 3 Kamehameha battles 10th-ranked ‘Iolani in later games at Aloha Stadium.

Waianae 27, Campbell 0

Following a frustrating week of shutout ball against an Interscholastic League of Honolulu powerhouse, the Waianae Seariders returned to top form.

The No. 7 Seariders crushed visiting Campbell 27-0 at Raymond Torii Field behind a balanced attack of smashmouth ball and a finesse passing game to remain atop the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West standings at 2-0 (2-2 overall).

Waianae didn’t look like the team that was dominated in the trenches in a 13-0 loss to Kamehameha. The Wilson brothers — Puletua at quarterback, Eleu as the bruising fullback, and James as a lithe option to rush or catch — carried the Seariders to victory over the Sabers (2-2, 1-1 OIA Red West), who were coming off consecutive victories behind the arm of quarterback Maika Ulufale.

In a game televised on OC 16, the dual threat Puletua went for 80 yards rushing on five carries, including a 40-yard keeper score on a fake handoff in the first quarter, and 158 yards passing.

Waianae coach Danny Matsumoto saw improvement — his team had only one turnover, compared to four giveaways against the Warriors last week — but was less than satisfied as he considered some of the other powerhouses in his conference. Waianae inserted its backups for most of the fourth quarter.

“There was some improvement, but there still is so much that we need to work on,” said Matsumoto, who honed in on blocking and receiving. “We’re not as sharp as we want to be yet. Campbell’s a tough opponent, they played a hell of a game. They got some exciting players. The score doesn’t reflect — it could have been a closer game than that.”
