Dallas Inouye dusted the field by more than 30 seconds to give Moanalua a repeat winner at the OIA Cross Country Championships at Central Oahu Regional Park on Saturday.
Inouye covered the sprawling 3-mile course in 21 minutes, 17.93 seconds to beat teammate Maleah Kanayama‘s 21:49.91 clocking. Inouye’s time was the slowest at the meet since it moved to three miles in 2005.
Inouye’s win comes on the heels of Brooklyn Allen‘s title for Na Menehune last year. Moanalua had the top two girls finishers, the first time a school has done that since Leilehua in 2011, but it didn’t bring Na Menehune their first team title since 1994.
That honor went to Kalaheo, which won for the first time since 1993 behind Anna Neubauer and Malgorzata Biela.
The Mustangs five scoring runners averaged 23:33.85 minutes, led by Grace Kathman‘s 13th-place finish. She was joined by Karina Maciel (16th), Macy Carroll (17th), Emily Naylor (20th) and Larrissa Teramura (27th). Grace Nastase (36th) and Sawyer Fernandez (43rd) pushed them to those heights.
Kalani repeated as the boys team winner, led by Sean Guillermo‘s fifth-place finish. He was followed by Micah Kimura (9th), Sean Koyamatsu (12th), Kaulana Suzuki (22nd) and Dristen Canaday (24th).
Kalaheo’s Kangsan Meyers finished seventh, breaking the Mustangs’ five-year stretch of gold medalists.
The top spot went to Narayana Schneider of McKinley, who ran in 17:31.05 to beat Roosevelt’s Reimon Wada by nearly four seconds.
It was McKinley’s first-ever individual championship and first top three finish since Blaine Lacanaria in 1988.
