GAME NIGHT 10/19: Kapolei/Kahuku

10:09: Kapolei turns it over on downs one last time, Kahuku takes one final knee, and 33-13 is your final. Kapolei must now await the end of the Campbell-Waianae game to know its fate.


10:03: Heffernan gets his second score of the day on a 2-yard rush and this one’s pretty much over. Erickson’s extra point attempt is no good but the Kahuku lead is 33-13 with 1:22 to go.

9:58: Kapolei turns it over on downs on their own 21. Kahuku looks to run out the clock with 2:35 remaining and a 27-13 lead.

9:51: Kapolei recovers a fumble and starts on their own 3 after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty with 4:01 to go.

9:48: The Hurricanes turn it over on downs on their own 23. Huge stop for Kahuku, who leads 27-13 with 4:40 left and an opportunity to milk some clock.

9:45: Kahuku turns it over on downs at the Kapolei 25. The Hurricanes have 6:34 to try to come back.

9:41: Faleta intercepts his second pass of the day, giving Kahuku the ball back on its own 49 with 9:07 to go.

9:37: TOUCHDOWN KAHUKU. Mason Paulo hauls in a 19-yard pass from Sauvao on fourth-and-7 and Heffernan’s PAT is good. Kahuku extends its lead to 27-13 with 9:22 to go.

9:29: The Hurricanes make it a one possession game after Fonoti’s 25-yard field goal with 11:50 to go in the fourth quarter. Kahuku still leads 20-13.

FOURTH QUARTER

9:27: The score remains 20-10 after a scoreless third quarter. But the Hurricanes are in prime position to score with the ball at the Kahuku 7.

9:21: The Hurricanes take over from their own 25 after a Kahuku punt.

9:17: Kapolei turns it over on downs at the Kahuku 34, 3:20 left in the third.

9:13: Kahuku goes three-and-out. Kapolei looks to cut into the deficit starting from the Kahuku 40 with 5:56 left in the third.

9:10: The Hurricanes can’t cut into the lead after Fonoti’s 35-yard field goal attempt is blocked. Kahuku starts from its own 37 with 7:31 left in the third.

9:06: Sauvao is INTERCEPTED by Peni Naulu, who takes it to the Kahuku 11 with 8:43 to go in the third.

9:04: Kapolei goes three-and-out and Kahuku starts again from its own 20 after a touchback with 9:35 left in the third.

8:59: The Red Raiders go three-and-out and punt from their own end zone. Erickson’s punt gets a Kahuku bounce to the Kapolei 40 with 10:42 left in the third quarter.

8:55: Wow. Kahuku ALMOST lets Kapolei recover a kick on its own 3 yard line to start the half. The Hurricanes still have to feel good about the field position the Red Raiders have.

THIRD QUARTER

8:47: The Red Raiders have been balanced offensively with 135 passing yards to go with 88 yards on the ground. The defense has also been stout with two interceptions.

8:37: Kahuku turns it over on downs at the Kapolei 40 with five seconds left. The Hurricanes take a knee. Kahuku is up 20-10 heading into the half. The Red Raiders also receive to start the second half.

8:29: The Hurricanes punt again, and Kahuku starts from its own 15 with 1:02 left in the half.


8:22: PICK-6 KAHUKU. Joseph Taufa intercepts Rapis and takes it 25 yards to the house. Heffernan’s PAT is no good but the Red Raiders extend their lead to 20-10 with 1:38 to go in the half.

8:20: Kahuku elects to go for it on fourth down at the Kapolei 15 but turns it over on downs. The Hurricanes have 1:46 to score before the half.

8:16: Kenai Liua RECOVERS a fumble for Kahuku at the Kapolei 21, 2:35 left in the half.

8:14: The Red Raiders take their first lead of the game after Kainoa Crismon hauls in a 30-yard pass from Sauvao. Heffernan’s extra point is good and Kahuku leads 14-10 with 2:48 left in the half.

8:08: The Hurricanes retake the lead after Fonoti’s 33-yard field goal with 4:08 left in the first half.

8:04: Kapolei goes three-and-out again and punts, but Dustin Lino-Adkins recovers a Kahuku fumble at the Kahuku 16.

8:01: Kahuku is forced to punt after picking up a first down and not much after. Kapolei takes over from its own 20 after a touchback with 6:44 left in the half.

7:57: Kapolei goes three-and-out. Kahuku takes over from its own 41 with 9:49 left in the first half.

7:51: TOUCHDOWN KAHUKU. Duke Heffernan, Tommy’s grandson, takes a direct snap, punches it in for a three-yard score and kicks the ensuing extra point to even it up at 7 with 10:56 to go in the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

7:46: The first quarter ends with Kapolei holding a 7-0 advantage, but Kahuku is in position to respond. The Red Raiders will start the second quarter facing second-and-8 from the Kapolei 20.

7:40: TOUCHDOWN KAPOLEI. Elijah Badoyen catches a 52-yard pass from Rapis thrown perfectly in stride for Badoyen to break away from Kahuku’s secondary. Badoyen dropped the ball briefly on his way to the end zone but it went right back into his hands. Micah Fonoti‘s extra point is good and the Hurricanes lead 7-0 with 3:33 left in the first quarter.

7:34: Kahuku quarterback Robert Sauvao is intercepted by Landan Shove and the Hurricanes take on their own 19.

7:31: The Hurricanes pick up a first down before the Red Raiders force them to punt. Kahuku takes over from its own 46 with 8:31 left in the first quarter.

7:26: A quick three-and-out for Kahuku forces the Red Raiders to punt. Ethan Erickson punts a nice one and Kapolei will start from its own 5 with 10:52 left in the first.

7:24: Kapolei quarterback Christian Rapis is PICKED OFF on the first offensive play by Tevita Faleta. Kahuku ball on its own 48.

7:22: Kapolei will start from its own 38 after a nice return.

FIRST QUARTER

7:20: A large contingent from the Heffernan family joins the Red Raiders for the coin toss. Kapolei will receive to start the game.

A nice tribute by Kahuku, who lost program legend Tommy Heffernan earlier in the week. Junior varisty and varsity players, as well as other community members, were seen praying and taking pictures in the shrine.

7 p.m.: We’re looking at a potential early kickoff after Kahuku won the JV game 42-0. The running clock was on at the start of the second half, making the game go by considerably faster.
