Saturday night, Mililani quarterback Dillon Gabriel has an opportunity to break Tua Tagovailoa‘s Hawaii state passing record of 8,158 yards.
That number would have been shattered by now if Tua’s brother, Taulia, stayed in Hawaii.
The former Kapolei quarterback for two years is over 12,000 passing yards for his high school career.
Taulia, an Alabama commit and the younger brother of Alabama Crimson Tide star Tua Tagovailoa, threw for 507 yards in a 35-21 victory for Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.) over Oak Mountain (Birmingham, Ala.) last Friday.
Tonight against Tuscaloosa County, Tagovailoa finished 25-for-48 for 350 yards and and three touchdowns and also rushed for a 2-yard score.
Now, Tagovailoa’s career stats after five games of his senior year are:
>> 41 games (32-9)
>> 968 completions
>> 1,573 attempts
>> .615 completion percentage
>> 12,353 yards
>> 30 interceptions
>> 120 touchdowns
He transferred after his sophomore season for the Hurricanes, in part to be closer to his brother.
Thompson Academy moved to 4-1 this season.
In two seasons for Kapolei, Tagovailoa played 23 games, went 16-7, and threw for 6,703 yards with 64 TDs. He passed for 3,880 yards with 36 TDs as a junior for Thompson in a 12-1 season a year ago. He’s off to a big senior-year start, having thrown for 1,970 yards and 20 TDs with only one interception after five games.
Gabriel needs 320 yards against Waianae on Saturday to move past Tua Tagovailoa for No. 1 all-time in Hawaii. Only Tua and Saint Louis’ Timmy Chang have thrown for more than 8,000 yards in a career.
