DOE says Castle video of dangerous tackle drills has been addressed

This is a screenshot from a video circulating on social media in which Castle players are taking a 20-yard head start at a full sprint before hitting each other.

There is a video making the rounds on social media, showing Castle football players doing a drill that appears to be seriously dangerous.

The video was taken by a parent, who can be heard saying things like, “This is a concussion waiting to happen.” It also shows two players getting hurt, including one who is seen getting attention from coaches.

The school and the Hawaii Department of Education have taken steps to make sure the Knights coaches are not putting students in harm’s way with such drills.

Coach John Hao, who was not at the practice when the video was taken, referred all questions to the DOE. Castle athletic director Laynie Sueyasu could not be reached Friday.

“The video is from a practice that occurred in July,” DOE spokesperson Lindsay Chambers wrote in an email to Hawaii Prep World. “The concerns were brought to the school’s attention and were addressed immediately with their coaching staff. They have taken the necessary steps to ensure that their student-athletes won’t be participating in these types of drills in the future. This includes educating and retraining coaches on appropriate practice and training strategies.”

In the 1-on-1 drill on video, players ran straight at each other on a full sprint from 20 yards apart, one with the ball and the other tasked with tackling.

Bunch of clown coaches pulling drills like that. Gotta be dumb is DOE has to bring it to your attention that what you’re doing is dumb. Only a clown head coach defers questions to someone else. Your staff is your responsibly. Jokes upon jokes.

The dumbest drill I have seen in a long time. If my son was practicing this shit, he would have been pulled from the team, wtf is this bs.

I cannot believe no parents didn’t walk straight on to that field….

This video right here is what’s wrong with our society right now. Instead of walking down onto to the field and stopping what’s going on these idiots would rather film and comment. GROW SOME F@CKEN BALLS AND DO SOMETHING! F@KEN MAHU!

I seen the video, and it’s very disturbing. Poor judgment on the coaches part.

Lawsuit waiting to happen, an Attorney going have fun with this, easy money, DOE going to have to settle out of court as they cannot justify the several concussions suffered in this drill along with the kid with the sprained shoulder. Wow! What are the Castle Coaches doing? And you can see several of them along side the drill. I understand this occurred on the 1st day of allowed contact, ahhh, what happened to their “Teaching Progression?” for teaching blocking, tackling. What’s going on at that school? The parent filming called it “one concussion waiting to happen”.

We had a drill like this but 10 yards apart, no running start, a tackling DRILL. This right here isn’t a drill, this is what NOT to do to get a concussion. What’s the purpose? No purpose whatsoever. The coaches should put some pads on and lineup 20 yards apart and demonstrate.

Parents and kids complain. Then Castle fires coach who enforced conditioning, team discipline and gave the school an OIA Championship. Then Castle hires a new coach/staff, the team is winless, undisciplined (more unsportsmanlike penalties) and sh*t like this happens. Parents complain. Head coach defers questions , AD can’t be reached, And a video that has gone VIRAL. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN KANEOHE?!!!!

Easiest solution get rid of the coaches and the AD one time

Coaches are clowns lol…. Kalaheo football staff are all CASTLE alumni and are making a difference over there with 20 something players which are mostly freshman and sophomores playing vars. What the hell is going on at Castle? They have 50 or 60 players now and they still can’t win a game…. SMH

I believe the coaches should be fired. After the father spoke out on the news the kids have been benched. The kids are starters with awesome grades. While they meet the code of champions they feel the retaliation from the coaches. If you look up the stats of these three boys you will see that talent has nothing to do with why they ain’t playing. Not right!
