HALL PASS: Campbell’s Jocelyn Alo

Over the next 24 hours, Hawaii Prep World and the Star-Advertiser will release 12 small features on the 2017 inductees into the Hall of Honor ahead of Sunday’s ceremony.

Respect is earned and few have commanded the level of deference afforded to Jocelyn Alo.

Not long after Alo transferred from Kahuku, where she won a state wrestling crown as a sophomore, her at-bats — whether in games or practice — became must-watch moments.

In her first state tournament with the Sabers, Alo went 7-for-9 with a double, a triple and two home runs. She drove in eight runs in four games to lead Campbell to a second straight Division I title and was later named the Honolulu Star-Advertiser position player of the year.

As Alo’s reputation grew with each blast, opportunities to swing the bat as a senior dwindled as opponents opted to send her to first base rather than risk having her send one over the fence.

Kealakehe challenged her in the state tournament and Alo responded with a shot out of Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

She went on to walk 13 times in 17 plate appearances in the tournament, perhaps the most telling coming early in a quarterfinal matchup with Maryknoll. With two out and the bases loaded in the second inning, the Spartans pitched around Alo to force in the game’s first run in Campbell’s 11-2 victory.

Her command behind the plate was equally unquestioned, her chemistry with pitcher Danielle Cervantes undeniable as they led the Sabers to a third consecutive title.

Alo signed with defending national champion Oklahoma and is only the second girl in the Hall of Honor who excelled in both wrestling and softball, joining Kamehameha’s Hoku Nohara.

Alo is also the second female from Campbell inducted into the Hall of Honor, joining Tracie Huddy (1985).
