During the Star-Advertiser’s countdown of the top 10 teams in preseason we have been publishing each team’s first-team All-State players. Now it is time for every school’s greatest heroes.

The first All-State team was published by the Honolulu Advertiser in 1972 and the Star-Bulletin followed with its first team in 1977, satisfied with publishing only all-league teams during that span using the rational that they hadn’t seen enough neighbor-island teams to accurately choose the best. The Star-Bulletin did give out the “Thom McAn Player of the Year Award,” though, choosing the single best player in the state with character weighed in.

Ah, Kyle, must not have linked them on the spreadsheet. Thanks for the fix, they have 91 and I just added it.

If I am reading your article correctly, you are saying the first all-state team was selected in 1972. My recollection is that it started in the 1970 season by the Advertiser, the first year where the public schools broke away from the ILH. I’m sure you can look it up. If you are going to list all the players who received such honors, the very first team should be recognized.

Thanks, H, I will look it up and if it is true I will add them. I didn’t see one for the 1971 Advertiser, and didn’t look for 1970.

Hey Jerry can you please tell me how to get all of a schools stats from 1972 on up. I got to it earlier and saw the stats for passing, rushing, and receiving for every game that Aiea played. I wish I didn’t though because I saw mine from my sophomore yr to senior, and it was a brutal reminder when we only won 1 game in 2 yrs. anyway can you help?

I will email you, Conrad, and we can continue this discussion there.

I’ll get to 70 and 71 the next time I hit the library. Don’t know when that will be, but it’s on my list.
